Game Design

 What is a game?

If you put this question to a hundred people you would, without doubt, get one many different answers. Before conducting some research on the topic I would have said it an activity that involves making choices which results in either winning or losing, but I know realise it is much more complicated than that. The article linked goes into much more depth about what a game is. Even though there are many different answers to the question, there is not one exact right answer which should be used as there are so many various ways to answer it. There are however facts about what games are which include:

  • Games are an activity
  • Games have rules
  • Games have goals
  • Games involve decision making
In order to make your own game or to explain a game to another person it is important that you understand the correct vocabulary to use as it shows a greater understanding of what you are talking about.

Moving on from a what the definition of a game is I found the reading The organic nature of game ideation by Kultima Annakaisa very insightful. This paper delved more into the life of a game developer and how their ideas arise. It covered all aspects of how a game idea develops and how an idea changes drastically from its first initial phase. Through conducting interviews with game developers in 2005 and 2007, Annakaisa found that when an idea is born it has to go through many different processes in order for it to be developed in which many changes in the creative process occur. It was very interesting to see on paper how game developers use outside inspirations from everyday life to come up with ideas whilst others use the simple well known technique of brainstorming.

After my readings I went onto YouTube to find some videos on the work of a game designer. After watching several I found these three the most helpful.

  2. I definitely agree with you on the fact that you'd get a different answer from everyone on what is a game. I've noticed everyone has different ideas going through the blogs. I loved the TED talk, I saw that recently too. Absolutely a must watch/listen. I thought the reading was insightful and further proved that most people have a somewhat varied idea of what creates a game!

  3. Hey, I agree what is a game and what classify as a game as there is so many different types of games from video to playing a game such as rock paper scissors the question is are they both games? The readings gave a great view or what makes a game a game. I like that way you have added links to the post making it easier to click on when finishing reading.
